Despite having a strong sporting tradition, St Edward’s, the exclusive college for boys, seemed to have reached its zenith some years ago, hardly making the headlines anymore, at least not in athletics.

Perhaps, this was due to the emergence of a number of private schools who place more emphasis on sports. Another reason might be that the college no longer takes in students as borders.

Well, if the schools’ cross-country event held last week at Marsa is anything to go by, than St Ed-ward’s is back with a bang.

Winning two out of three individual events, and finishing second and third in the other, paved the way for their teams to claim top spot in the Primary School, Cadet and Youth categories, the latter two being for senior school students, in these events organised by Athletics Malta.

No fewer than 346 children from private, church and government schools descended on the grass areas at Marsa, ably led by teachers and minders for a morning of cross country running.

Coming from 25 different education establishments, the attendance reflected the efforts of the Sports Promotion Unit within the Ministry of Education and the Malta Schools Sports Association to make this event a success.

If St Edward’s distinguished itself among the boys, San Anton can justifiably claim the overall mantle.

Being one of the mixed schools present, and fielding strong teams in all six events, individually their girls placed first in both events for the Primary Schools and that for the Cadet Section. Their teams also finished first in these events.

Meanwhile, the boys from San Anton were hot on the heels of St Edward’s, placing second in the Primary Section and third in the other two contests.

Another mixed school going strong and ever-present in the association’s programme is San Andrea, under the expert guidance of Kevin Zammit.

The San Andrea girls won the seniors title, came second in cadets and third among the primaries. Their boys’ team placed second in the cadet category.

Among the government schools, Kulleġġ San Ġorg Preca (Paola) fared well in both cadet categories, the girls’ team finishing second and the boys third.

Another school to win two prizes was St Catherine’s, third in both the team races for the senior schools.

Others who came away with a prize were Kulleġġ Maria Regina for girls, second in the senior race, and Kulleġġ San Benedittu who were also second in the corresponding event for boys.
