Capital of Culture information meeting
An information meeting about Malta hosting the European Capital of Culture in 2018 is being organised for interested bidders.
The event will take place on Friday and will provide information about the selection process of the locality and region that will eventually host the event.
Information will be given about the application process and the aims of the European Capital of Culture, the Education Ministry said.
The project follows the European Cities of Culture programme which was founded in 1985 by Melina Mercouri, then Minister for Culture in Greece. The Cities of Culture programme format ended in 2004 and the Capital of Culture 2005-2019 was then established by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
While the government has an important role in the project, it would also involve artists, cultural organisations, local councils and all those contributing directly or indirectly to the arts sector, the ministry said.
The event will be held at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry in Republic Street, Valletta, at 8.30 a.m. For bookings call Joanna Bowman on or 2124 5168 by Wednesday.
