The first set of 16 community nurses graduated last week after completing a three-year degree at the University.

The former Institute of Health Care, now the Faculty of Health Sciences, opened its doors for the first time in 2007 to nurses who wanted to specialise in community nursing or midwifery.

The course formed part of an initiative to develop primary care services by giving specialised professionals particular skills for different community settings such as the home and schools.

Community nurses carry out a variety of specialised work including detailed health assessments of individuals at home, during which they may identify physical or psychosocial needs.

The faculty is currently running another degree programme in community nursing care and plans to continue providing this opportunity for study in the future.
