Ever since food for the Meals on Wheels system started being prepared in the kitchens of St Vincent de Paul Residence, the demand for the service has increased.
Answering a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), Health Minister Joseph Cassar said the number of subscribers to the service each year since 2005 had been respectively 1,437, 1,200, 1,358, 1,049 and 1,074.
The number of meals varied from day to day because not every subscriber asked for regular service. There were currently 300 people who took daily service. Up to November 15 this year the number of subscribers had been 1,470. On that date there had been 51 persons on the waiting list.
The Meals on Wheels service is available to persons aged over 60 and those with special needs.
