The public discussions unfolding in our islands on issues which affect the present and future make-up of our society, culture, economy and specific civilisation stand to benefit from good advice which Pope Benedict XVI frequently profers.

In particular I think the below excerpt sheds some “light” in addressing the “signs of the times”, utterances made prior to the issue of Pope Benedict’s interview with Peter Seewald in book form, Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times.

Speaking to Catholic intelligensia and politicians during his September visit to Great Britain, Pope Benedict XVI stated that they are duty-bound to commit to promoting a dialogue between faith and contemporary culture. The Pontiff urged them to “never... lose sight of their calling to use their talents and experience in the service of the faith, engaging contemporary... culture at every level.”

Even the lay faithful are leading protagonists in the re-evangelisation of... culture in order for the latter to guarantee a truthful understanding of liberty, respect and equality. In Pope Benedict’s own words: “For this reason I appeal in particular to you, the lay faithful... not only to be examples of faith in public, but also to put the case for the promotion of faith’s wisdom and vision in the public forum. Society today needs clear voices which propose our right to live, not in a jungle of self-destructive and arbitrary freedoms, but in a society which works for the true welfare of its citizens and offers them guidance and protection in the face of their weakness and fragility. Do not be afraid to take up this service to your brothers and sisters, and to the future of your beloved nations.”

Naturally Malta and Gozo have their own particular ethos somewhat removed from that of Scotland and England, yet our islands require no less engagement by public and Christian spirited individuals and groups to man the metaphorical fortifications against the present besiegers. Fortifications which might not stand up if turncoats are left to their own opinion forming unchallenged.
