Incredibly, this happened in Malta. I've been since 1995 every year for the holidays on this beautiful island, it wasnt that bet then. I'm 56 years of age and am also planning to spend my retirement there. But if you read and hear these messages, then I have to think about it very carefully. Very sad indeed!

one has to look at the "root cause " of this much increased criminal behaviour ..could it be drug related ,could it be lack of money related ,why are people reverting to crime when we are supposed to be so well off ..is it a sign of more people going under the poverty line ?? what is it ?....any comments are welcome to this question ....but we know for sure the criminal activity is alive and well and growing in malta ...is it the rich vs poor gap getting wider ....

I stated months ago on here that Malta is becoming a less safe place to be and certain people criticised me , since then it seems the trend has continued and seems to be getting worse !! ...where are those people now ? probably still with their heads buried in the sand !!

I agree with you up to a certain point, there was always some crime taking place, that has always been the case since the begining of time. However there was never this saturation of crime as we are experiencing now. It is the same here in Australia, we never experienced this amount of crime as we do now. Do you remember when most of Malta as in Australia people use to leave the front door ajar? I wonder how many still practise that nowadays. Whether it is because we are losing our Faith or something else, I cannot say, but I can say we lost a lot of respect for one another; and that is sad. It has all become about a "ME Society" bugger everyone else. Very sad indeed.

It is sad when people with sound moral values imply that, because moral values equate religiosity, in their peculiar way of thinking they think that anyone who is NOT religious can not have sound moral values. This is very dangerous thinking, and unfair to both the person making this assumption and the person he is making assumptions about. The fact of the matter is that a felon could as well be a 'religious' person who erred. In other words, religious people do not have a monopoly over sound moral values. If they did, the sacrament of confession would be redundant (paradoxically, the non-religious have no use for confession which is basically about sinning again, and again, and again - and being forgiven every time. And no questions asked?).

J Caruana Well, I must admit that for the time being, we have a very small police force! We will be better when we will have a police officer escorting every car!
If, however, that becomes the case, as you seem to suggest, (that police will be patrolling EVERY road), you will probably be complaining about our 'police state'.
K Agius I believe that your comment makes MUCH MORE sense: we are too lenient with criminals, so they find it 'worth' taking the chance!

Many, rightly, are asking 'What is happening to Malta?' Many don't believe that loosing our true christian values has anything to do with this! I do! And so does J Calleja it seems! When Malta was more 'faithful', these things rarely happened. THIS is the price we are paying. Without christian values, life becomes nothing; injuring, robbing, insulting others becomes everyday occurrance. Enjoy.

When a society loses its moral values, you get people who think nothing about committing violent crimes in the streets and everywhere else. Unfortunately Malta is becoming like everywhere else and as a result, crime will go up. The Malta many of us know is long gone. Many are clamoring to be like the rest of the EU and immerse themsleves in all the values or lack thereof of a decadent Western culture. Lenient sentences handed out by judges and laws that are not tough enough on cirme do not help either.

For folks who believe in turning the other cheek, you sure as hell stick out when asking for harsher sentences...lol...and these guys want to preach..
Regarding Catholicism and the such, the worst massacres and crimes occured when religion ruled supreme!
There are no such things as catholic values either, but rather, good values which have been used(rightly so) by teh Catholic Church and other major religions.

Factually incorrect. In the good old days when we were supposedly more loyal to our faith and values prostitution, sexual abuse, marital abuse were rife albeit hidden. Let us not even begin to talk about social injustice, exploitation of the more vulnerable member of society. I am not sure there were less robberies or murders either ... we're living in age of information. People who go on about values and principles actually scare me a little. I often find that you tend to be the least loving, tolerant and compassionte of all.

We don't want or need a police state. We need people to take on responsibilities and not just point fingers at people. How many people turn their heads when they see something happening? too many i say.
Religion has got nothing to to with it. In fact i find most religious people hypocrites. There were, are and will always be crime around us. During the past few decades we just have more access to information. Values are important however, true values come from within not from a few verses of an obsolete book however. Religious institutions have become nothing more than than a disease in contemporary society. They separate and divide more than they unite. They regard tolerance as a virtue yet are the least willing to tolerate that which counters their 'holy' code. A code for mindless followers, rather than rational and sensible beings.
Amen!

Do not start blaming all this on the lack of Christian values or you will be reminding everyone of those values the Christian priests have as they molest innocent boys every day.
What next ! Those who claim to be Christians are now to be blaming 'hold-ups', 'gun crime' and 'crimes of passion' on those who have different views, or not necessarily of Christian faith, no matter how decent and innocent.
Nothing can be more absurd than the infantile words some apparent Christians utter in their attempt to be noble.

What is happening? Why suddenly all these cases involving robbery? Now also Motorists? Suddenly things are getting bad. Armed again. What was the ARM this time?

Some people protest road blocks because they say it infringes on their human rights. They say it is unjust to have roadblocks and search without probable cause. Maybe they have a point but a roadblock to rob somebody? On the streets of Malta? Just yesterday we had of all things a drive-by fatal shooting. That is what they call it in the corrupt countries like the USA. Hold up of banks and jewellers and jewellery stores, in Malta? Muggings on the streets, In Malta? Politicians authorizing personal raises in secret, In Malta? ( something that occurs mostly in corrupt countries). Unmarried teens having illegitimate babies in big numbers in Malta? A great number of women who cannot remember who the father of their child is, in Malta? There is no divorce in Malta? We are living beyond our means, in Malta? We are the most obese people in all of the EU , in Malta? Men and women prefer to cohabit in lieu of traditional marriage in Malta? Shall I go on? What is happening to this once beautiful and serene island? How come we are catching up to the rest of the world so fast? QUO VADIS MALTA?

You ;re right J Caruana..They should have been following the victim' s car prior to the robbery hux...comne to think of it, the police should follow every single car and provide armed escorts to ALL motorists...just in case...
WHy don't some people realise that their comments sometimes border on the ridiculous?

Building on Jeremy J Camileri's opinion, I propose everyone is issued with a Police search/torchligh like Commissioner Gordon uses in Batman. When in trouble just flash it at the sky and the Dark Knight comes to your rescue.
