It is a pity the European Parliament proposal to extend maternity leave from 14 to 20 weeks and give a short period of parental leave to fathers were rejected by the Council of Ministers. By joining the countries opposed to the proposal, Malta has shown that protecting the interests of employers is more important than making it easier for families to balance their family and work responsibilities. This also undermines the pledge by the government to increase female participation in the labour market which is the lowest in the EU.
