HP to set up education and research centres at University, Mcast
The IT Ministry and HP have signed an agreement whereby HP will establish Education and Research Centres of HP Technology at the University of Malta and Mcast.
The Education and Research Centre at the University will be set up under the HP ‘International Institute of Technology’ (IIT) Programme, which groups 21 universities.
The aim of the programme is to establish training and scientific centres of HP technology at Universities; coordinate HP specialists and university professors’ joint work to develop new IT training courses and organise scientific work by students on research carried out by HP labs.
The programme also delivers training to students and complements technical departments’ educational programs with courses on modern technologies.
At Mcast, HP will train lecturers who will in turn teach HP courses.
HP will also provide hardware and software for the lab at Mcast, as well as online HP IT courses and IT curricula developed by HP IIT member Universities.
It will organise visits by HP managers and researchers and provide consultancy; organise exchange visits for UoM academic staff and students among HP ITT community, provide support on PR activities; and job-possibilities; post-grad scholarships; placements and internships for UoM students.
For Mcast, HP will provide hardware and software for the lab; HP courses and course material and training for lecturers; visits by leading HP managers and HP labs researchers to Mcast with lectures on HP products, management, technologies, innovation and research; consultancy by leading HP trainers and specialists on subjects related to selected IT courses, and support on PR activities around HP center; and job possibilities for MCAST students in HP.

This certainly looks like excellent news but people are bound to wonder: how did the other I.T. companies look upon this agreement? Are they happy to be sidelined?
Moreover can an E.U. government really go ahead and pick a particular company and make arrangements with that company possibly to the detriment and chagrin of all other companies providing the same services?
It is clear from the article that such agreement was not made between the University /MCast and HP but between ''the IT Ministry and HP''.
Are such agreements acceptable in the European Union people may wonder?

This is excellent news. The way I see it, we have a win-win scenario, where both UoM students, as well as MCAST students will benefit, and so will the lecturers who will be trained by HP! Hopefully, it will be a win scenario for HP too, which will be an incentive for them to re-invest in our educational system. Malta needs more QUALITY IT Professionals, not larger numbers of IT Professionals.
Excellent initiative and well done to all involved.
