Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp saluted his free-scoring Spurs side after they sealed top spot in their Champions League group with a 3-3 draw against Dutch side FC Twente.

Tottenham wrapped up a superb start to their maiden Champions League campaign to claim a share of the points against Twente which saw them finish top of Group A ahead of Italian holders Inter.

Redknapp said he believed Tottenham had prevailed despite being drawn in a tough group which also included Germany’s Werder Bremen.

“At the start of this I said this was a tough group – we’ve got a team near the top of the Dutch league, Werder Bremen, who are a good side with lots of good players, and we’ve got the holders, Inter. I think it was the toughest group and to top it is brilliant,” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ve gone for it every game. We’ve come in thinking we could win and that’s how we play. We got goals and we conceded them, that’s how it is.

“We tend to score plenty and seem to give them away too. You want to win all your games so we wanted to win here but it’s important to finish top of the group and we’ve done that so I’m proud of the boys.”

An entertaining contest against the Dutch champions saw Spurs take the lead three times thanks to a Peter Wisgerhof own goal and two second-half strikes from England international Jermain Defoe.

Twente secured a share of the points thanks to goals from Denny Landzaat, Roberto Rosales and Nacer Chadli.

Asked if his philosophy was similar to that of Barcelona, who Spurs avoided drawing in the last 16 after topping the group, Redknapp added: “I don’t know if we can play like them but that would be nice.”

And he insisted his side would be one to avoid in the last 16.

“People look at us, especially our home record – we’re always dangerous at White Hart Lane,” he said.

“We’ve got a good squad of players. We’ll give anybody a game, for sure.”

Defoe, who marked his first Champions League start with a double, said: “We worked so hard to get here and you have to make the most of it.

“We’ve scored a lot of goals but it’s also important not to concede too many so it was frustrating against Bremen.

“We’ll take each game as it comes but we’re playing well and scoring goals and there are one or two injured players to come back in too.

“We’re looking good at the moment.”
