The average family in the UK will travel up to 207 miles over the festive period, making five stops to drop off the 37 presents bought for friends and family, according to a survey.

The average spent on these gifts is £520.49, according to a poll of 3,000 households by car company Saab UK.

Only 15 per cent of those taking trips to relatives or friends will travel on Christmas Day, with 36 per cent making journeys before Christmas Eve.

Those living in north-east England appear to be the most generous, with 43 per cent of them planning to exchange more than 20 presents with family members this Christmas. Those in Northern Ireland intend to make the most trips, with 17 per cent planning more than eight visits to friends and family this festive season.

The poll showed that 10 per cent admitted to breaking or damaging presents when trying to squeeze them into a car, with 17 per cent forced to leave gifts behind due to lack of space.

As many as 26 per cent said they needed another break after the Christmas holiday to recover from all the festive travelling, with 50 per cent intending not to give as many presents again and 25 per cent vowing not to travel so far next Christmas.
