Last weekend, the first game of the second round of the Winter league was played between Krishna and Melita Betfair.

Krishna won the toss and elected to bat. Dave Borg and Tim Wheeler opened the batting. Borg was first to go being caught after making 15 runs from 16 balls faced.

Wheeler ended making 12 runs. Andy Lenard played a top innings scoring 36 runs before having to retire when facing 30 balls. He hit one six and a four along the way.

Nowell Khosla did not have one of his better innings but still managed to retire after 30 balls, scoring 17 runs.

Mike Caruana scored 12 runs from seven balls before being caught brilliantly by Chris Naudi on the boundary.

Having first run to his left to get to the catch, Naudi suddenly had to switch to his right because the wind managed to change the direction of the ball.

Naudi flung to his right and caught the ball inches of the ground with his right hand.

The Krishna side totalled 106 runs from their 20 overs. For Melita, Tom Ried, Justin Brooke, Kevin Krishna, Tony Slater and Ian Pendlebury all took a wicket.

Melita’s reply started well enough with Chris Naudi and Justin Brooke making light work of the bowling and running well between the wickets. They had scored 38 runs before Brooke was caught for seven runs.

Naudi went on to top score with 35 runs for his team. Naudi’s wicket was the first of six in a brilliant 10-over spell between Lenard and Mike Caruana. Only 30 runs were scored from these overs.

Lenard ended with three wickets while Caruana ended with two and there was also a run-out.

John Grima managed eight runs and Andy Naudi seven. Betfair were bowled out for 76 runs.

Khosla also took two wickets and Darren Grech took one for Krishna.

Krishna earned 10 points for the win to go top while Betfair earned one point and are third in the standings with 10 points, two behind Marsa.

On Saturday, Melita Betfair will play Marsa at 10 a.m.

The academy will be from 9 a.m. till 10.30 a.m.

Winter League standings: Krishna 18; Marsa 12; Melita 10.
