The fifth 2010 Nestlé Fitness Outstanding Woman master class kicked off with much excitement amongst the finalists, with homeopath and mother of seven Bernardette Degaetano and company director and mother of two Antoinette Doneo both eager to hear all the trade secrets that make-up artist Elaine Stafrace had to impart.

Once again, restaurant manager and mother of two Melanie Xerri de Caro unfortunately had to give the master-class a miss, which only gave more time to the other two ladies to put forth a number of well-planned questions to Elaine!

Elaine started off by giving some general tips that apply to women of all ages, no matter their lifestyle! After checking out Antoinette’s and Bernardette’s make-up box and brushes, she pointed out that a set of good quality brushes was essential and made all the difference to the end result.

“I also see that a lot of women tend to use their big brushes in order to apply blusher, however this is wrong. Opt for a smaller brush as this will allow you to focus on a small area. Another common misconception is that your lipliner needs to be darker than your actual lipstick. Wrong – your lipliner needs to blend as much as possible with your lipstick, which means that they should be the exact same shade. Blend with your fingers or with a cotton bud to get a seamless look,” Elaine explained.

After analysing Antoinette’s style and complexion, Elaine showed her how brown shades suit her more than pink ones. Bernardette, on the other hand, needed to use eye shadow shades that created a contrast with her green eyes, as opposed to matching her eyeshadow to her eye colour.

“An illuminating concealer can be used to give a more vibrant look to the face. It can also be used to lighten the inner eye area to make the eye appear larger. On the other hand, to give a nice lift to the eyes all you need to do is use a darker shade around the outer edges,” the make-up artist continued.

After showing the ladies exactly how to go about creating their look, it was their turn to try their hand at the new tricks they learnt from Elaine. And as the end result shows, both pupils passed the test with flying colours!
