Hundreds of people turned up to snout out what was on offer at the Pork Fest in the main square of Siġġiewi yesterday morning.

In just three hours, about 500 pork pies were sold to visitors at San Nikola Square.

The festival, held by theResources and Rural AffairsMinistry and the Pig Breeders Cooperative, gave people the opportunity to source and see how Maltese pigs are treated.

It was packed with activities for the family who could taste freshly cooked pork by students from the Institute of Tourism Studies, for example, or buy fresh meat.

A small pig farm with a sow and her litter was also set up in the square, giving children the opportunity to see and touch the animals.

Visits to a nearby farm were held allowing people to see the pigs in their natural environment and how the rearing process works.

The government last month launched a branding campaign called Majjal ta’ Malta (Maltese Pork) on locally produced pork.

The local sourcing will allow consumers to differentiate between imported and Maltese pork thanks to a yellow tag displayed on the butchers’ doors where fresh Maltese pork is sold.
