GO forced to drop Living TV and Comedy Channel from TV line-up
GO television said today that as a result of international broadcasting developments, it will have to stop the retransmission of two tv channels – Living TV and Comedy Channel as from Thursday as the territorial rights for these channels cannot be cleared for Malta and are therefore not available for redistribution by any tv operator.
However, it said it had made improvements to its Silver and Gold packages.
GO’s Silver package will now include Zone Reality, Fine Living Network (FLN) and Animal Planet, the latter being a new channel to GO’s tv line-up.
The Gold package will be further enhanced with the Food Network and Animal Planet. In addition, GO’s movies and series channel – GO stars – will be offered free of charge to all Gold tv customers until June 2011.
Food Network is a unique lifestyle channel that strives to be way more than cooking. The network is committed to exploring new and different ways to approach food - through pop culture, competition, adventure, and travel - while also expanding its repertoire of technique-based information.
GO said the popular Animal Planet channel is the world’s only entertainment brand that immerses viewers in the full range of life in the animal kingdom with rich, deep content on multiple platforms. Programming highlights on Animal Planet include Whale Wars, River Monsters, I'm Alive, Monsters Inside Me, Pit Bulls, Parolees and Dogs 101.
During December GO stars will not only premiere top comedy series such as The Big Bang Theory and The Middle however also showcase a number of first run movies including The Hangover, Sherlock Holmes, The Informant, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in addition to other premiering titles such as Zodiac, The Brave One, The Prestige, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, The Invasion, A Serious Man, and Lucky You.
The changes in the tv line-up will be implemented on Thursday. Furthermore GO will be shortly announcing further channels in its tv line-up.
GO apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Wake up and join the Internet generation, forget dreambox, simply find a good streming service (Grabiod & Megavideo both highly recommended) and watch series like Dexter/CSI/Criminal minds/Desperate housewives etc for about 7euros a month.
Its not rocket science people.......

I'm so dissatisfied... Animal Planet is a good channel but I don't think that AP and Food Network are the right alternatives for Living and Comedy Central! And what's this with providing the Go Stars on only one set-top box??? Being a Gold subscriber, I would expect it for free from the beginning! But noooo... I have to change cards to watch this channel on different tv's! This is a complete farce!!!!
Tabone
Dec 8th 2010, 22:18
I have just enquired with GO and was told that they are giving me for free the movie channel
I have the GOLD package and 3 set top boxes, when I went to watch the GO STARS, I could only watch the GO STARS on one set top box, on the other 2 I got the message ACCESS DENIED, I enquired with the customer service and was told that the GO STARS will only be obtained on one set top box only. SO ANYONE HAVING ONE SET TOP BOX IS GETTING MORE VALUE THAN HAVING 3 SET BOXES PAID FOR.
Want to know what the answer was from GO? Take the card out and insert it in another set top box. So if i'm watching sports relaxed in my living room and my kids are in their room, they cant watch the comedy channel anymore thanks to GO, and they want to watch GO STARS which was replaced instead of the Comedy channel , we have to choose if it's either sports or films. While I will still be paying the actual bill from GO.
WHAT A RIPOFF

Hi Mr. Tabone,
I am sharing your same situation. The only reason why I switched to Gold+ was to be able to view the Living, Trouble and Paramount. Quite recently, Trouble and Paramount became Comedy Central. These two stations are being replaced by two stations which I'm not particularly interested in and the only reason why I was considering to keep the Gold+ service was to be able to view Go Stars, which is an acceptable trade-off.
Having more than a single set top box puts Go's consumer to a disadvantage because to view the Go Stars channel, one has to constantly keep changing cards between set top box because Go decided to give their consumers only one go stars per household. If they do understand that losing two important stations is an inconvenience to the consumer, how greater the inconvenience is to keep switching cards......????? In my opinion, this is not worth it, and would gladly rent a couple of DVDs per month and downgrade the service.
I sure hope that Go reconsiders this inconvenient approach.

invest in DREAMBOX u will get SKY italy and Sky Germany with hundreds of channels and get twice u ll get from other provider!
S. Fenech
Dec 8th 2010, 18:40
Everyone is trying to hint that Dreambox is the solution. May I point out that all those using a dreambox and is paying for a service to share the keys of normally blocked stations such as SKY is actually breaking the law. So before doing any affirmations it is best to check what can and what cannot be done.
If all of you out there are going to continue doing so, do remember that for such a service you have to use the internet in order to see such stations as these keys are obtained over the internet.
May I remind you that the two TV providers also offer Internet services, and in most of the cases most of dreambox users are using one of their backbones. If that does not switch on a light...just think about it...they are the same people who can actually block such a service. The technology to do so is readily available and believe me it is not expensive...

Why should we have to wait till the 2 year contract to expire when we signed the contract because we actually thought that these two channels were part of the package.......they didn`t keep their word, so why should we?
I don`t care if they lost the rights to these channels, i`m a customer here and expect to get what I signed for!!!
What a joke!!!

I agree with your statement. GO didn't keep their word. I consider this as breach of contract. The Food Network and Animal Planet are not 2 stations I would have opted for. They are not similar to Living and Comedy Chanel. I would have expected similar stations to replace these 2. As for GO Stars I have 2 things to say 1: As a Gold customer I expected this station to be free from the beginning. 2. Had I wanted this station I would have signed up for it. I was not too impressed with it when it aired for free in summer as there were too many repeats.

All that talk recently on the consumer protection act, what a load of rubbish. When things like this happen, we forget that we don't have protection as viewers. Let's face it, even with Living and Comedy channels, the choice was not too impressive. There were times when i would switch on the TV to watch something decent and relax but there would be nothing of substance. Maybe this would help to wean me off my TV addiction.

Why nobody should need a TV service provider, legal or illegal, in 5 easy steps:
(1) Google proxy server (hidemyass is a good starting point).
(2) Read the easy instructions, pay the subscription (€10 a month is about the going rate) and install.
(3) Change setting to USA (or UK) and access any of the free-to-use legal streaming sites such as hulu (USA) or even the tv station's official site such as BBC Iplayer (UK).
(4) Connect laptop to tv via vga cable (same lead used to connect a pc monitor, cost about €5).
(5) Watch a wider range of TV channels/ programmes/ films than you'll ever get on Melita, Go or Sky for that matter.

ZzzZZZzZZ as i dream ..... The only possible fair option for all customers would be a clause in the contract stating that if the company (being Melita / Go etc) can change the stations at their discretion, then the customer will have the right to terminate their contract without incurring expenses.
This, in my opinion, will encourage the service providers to fight a bit more to keep rights to certain channels as it will be in their interest not to loose clients.

@Mr Hansford,

i fail to understand your accusation , i asked a question purely because the said company has promised other things in the past and never honoured them like the Bayern Munich TV channel which was only on for an hour a day and nobody knew the time it would air. At least GO have always kept there word . So you expect me to just shut up and not ask questions, and i should just accept what was reported ? Oh by the way Ms Borg dont you find it strange that living was taken off form Melita's channel list http://www.melita.com/personal/tv/channels/?

There isn't much to choose between Melita and Go. Both extremely poor. Most of the channels they offer are either B or C class channels on Sky TV. Living TV most probably along with E! are the channels watched by most households (female audience) and what is the alternative now - ask them to watch River Monsters on Discovery!! No comparison. If you remove Living TV then get Fox, CBS, ITV, Five, AXN, Syfy, Alibi etc not a channel which no one watches!!! At this rate it would be best to sign up to the Basic Reception Service open an Apple Itunes Account get an Apple TV box for Stg 99 and buy all the tv shows you want legally and stream them on your TV.

"The Gold package will be further enhanced with the Food Network and Animal Planet. In addition, GO’s movies and series channel – GO stars – will be offered free of charge to all Gold tv customers until June 2011."
1. What will happen after June 2011?
2. What will be done to those who are currently paying for GO Stars?
3. Food network and Animal Planet!! LOL what a joke...does GO think ppl are interested in watching animals or food after a day's work? Living was much more interesting than both of these!
We GO clients aspect some sort of other arrangement...or price adjustment!

What if.... just what if... Go used a channel to air Comedies (from the UK, USA, Malta even etc. etc.) which they can purchase off the shelf and simply get airing rights and call the channel Go Comedy or whatever. Go can also have an English or Maltese 'voice' presenting the sitcoms etc and who knows they might even bring in some local advertising. If Go don't want to do it maybe somebody like Where's Everybody can do this. Lateral Thinking eh !.....would there be a problem with this ?

I have read the terms and conditions in my contract with Go and I see that I can terminate the contract without paying any fee if terms and conditions have been changed and Go will inform customers in writing of any change.
Yet, there is no reference to any change in tv stations in agreement but only to set top boxes provided.
I do not agree with the change in channels. Can I terminate the contract?
S. Camilleri

I think these are situations beyond control of GO and Melita so as long as they provide reasonable alternatives ... you got no case!
Christine Bright
Dec 8th 2010, 13:12
S. Camilleri,
Let me ask again since from your posts you seem to be in the know how of the ways Go and/or Melita work.
1. In my contract there are no clauses saying that should changes in the tv line up occur for reasons BEYOND OUR CONTROL, customers can be offered another alternative.
2. Beyond our control reasons should be specified too.
3. If Go had made an agreement for the retransmission of channels with another foreign company, their should have been a clause which states what type of procedure should be followed in the event territorial rights are not cleared to protect itself and its customers.
4. It's high time Go introduced more FTA channels mainly Rai Storia, Rai Gulp, MBC Action, K2, Boing, Pop, Tiny Pop etc without adding costs to customers. Go has been saying that there will be an addition to the channels for ages so one would expect FTA and other Sky UK/ Sky Italia channels

A believe that a valid point is that if we are deprived of world popular series such as Scrubs or Two and a half men we would be disadvantaged when communicating with other peoples, as we would not be aware of what they are talking about. Just imagine if we had not followed Startreck or JR on italian TV .
SO every effort must be made for us to be able to view whatever other educated , especially european, peoples are watching.

i have taken notice of the last figures issued by the broadcasting authority. from its findings it is evident that the only stations including foreign ones that the maltese viewers tune on are the ones that offer free to air programmes. so why all the different tariffs. these are only there to lure the gullable. it would be wiser for a company to offer a whole package at a very reasonable price irrespective of the number of non-starter programmes a company offers.

If you read well the GO contract it states clear that they can change channels and if you are a GO subscriber give your contract a good look as it is a clear clause. I am certain that not many people will be watching the " new improved tv line-up" !!! Unfortunately in Malta the maltese person doesnt have much of a say when it comes to these " monopolising " distributors. In Melita's Terms and Conditions
4. PROGRAMMING
4.1 All programming, programme services, channel allocations and channels are subject to change at Melita’s absolute discretion.
4.2 Customers acknowledge that many of the channels delivered by Melita over the cable network are under the control of third parties, and as such, Melita is not responsible for the availability of such Channels, their content, or for any changes in the scheduling or availability of specific programmes. Parental control is available for those subscribing to a service requiring a set-top box.
4.3 The Electronic Programming Guide (the `EPG’) programming guide provided by Melita is correct at the time of preparation. Programmes are subject to change without prior notice at the Channel’s own discretion.
Fair isn't it?

@ Ms. Mizzi
You clearly have no idea of what jurisdiction is about. The MBA has no power to intervene on territorial rights awarded by international providers.
Moreover, Melita have announced (see today's Times) that their discussions with international providers are still underway with a view to maintain transmissions.
The GO statement is nothing but a clear attempt at manipulating public opinion, drawing sympathy and confusing people's minds by making it seem that Melita are also switching off these channels immediately.
Customers should be treated with more respect and GO should know better than treating us in this shameful way.
At the same time, GO are totally silent on their botched investment in Greece.
S. Camilleri

Melita are just trying to do what they do best.... procrastinate and perpetuate doubt and indecision. I would think that before GO put up such a statement, they did their homework with relative providers. We'll see what happens ... .and who will get sued if he does not comply

I got robbed too by this company and by the way it is just one of the many in Malta that would like to swallow your purse. This Malta never changes. I was paying for Silver + when all I could get was a bunch of cartoon channels, MGM, E! and some other that never interested me. It's incredible the amount of cartoon channels they stuffed in the silver +. Do they think we all like cartoons? and by the way I don't even have children so I would have preferred to get a better mix of channels at least. I decreased the service to just reception and when I want to see a movie I either rent it or else download it for my personal use. At least paying only for the internet gives much more variety. All services in Malta are about money and crap received is in return.

I don't have TV. I opted for a huge internet package instead, and watch all tv episodes online :)
you might want to go on www.cucirca.com...it's awesome. Desperate Housewives, Two and a Half Men, Ghost Whisperer, Vampire Diaries, etc...you can find them all there.

Yeah right, and what about the crappy sports service with mediocre commentary. Using the small population tactic will not work any longer as soon more internet channels available to a worldwide audience (legally) ... just wait and see, than what Go & Melita??? Taking 2 channels away and changing them with 2 other, although these may be good, such as animal planet it may not be what the customer wanted so money is due for such customers and improve the GO sports service because it really sucks (btw I am no Melita fan but had to do with it for the past years and frankly though more expensive it was better)

All the more reason for me to buy a DreamBox. If Melita also drops Comedy Central then I will be left with no choice but to get the DreamBox. Although Torrents are pretty fast these days.

And what ever happened to Sky Malta ?

Strangely i did not receive a nice letter from GO to tell me this the way i receive when a new paid service is launched. That is what i call customer care. They take us for granted, add and delete channels at their convenience.

Does this mean that we were paying a premium for channels GO had no rights on it? Will MCA and MBA look into this? Under normal circumstances consumer pays a premium on channels where broadcasters must pay licences and rights fees. Now, if GO was not paying these, why did it levy additional premium? We have a right to know that if the law was broken, once, twice, these people have to pay. MCA, MBA please answer!

Ohh come on!! Your comment surely suggests you have no idea how things work. If GO had no right to transmit these channels, than it would have been sued by the owners of living tv and comedy channel. Further still, they would stop transmitting at once and not wait till Thursday!
But, to out your mind at 'rest':

RE: FRENCH GHANNEL . The time for introducing at least one French channel is long overdue. Go TV could surely have inserted a single French channel in its line during the last couple of years when it was liberally adding more channels. I am sure that hundreds of Maltese students taking French and many other local francophiles are very eager to watch French TV on their screens. Other TV companies also cater for minority audiences as this enhances their completeness of service and prestige. There is no valid reason why GO should be different.

So that s why the telesales department at Go are so intent of phoning up their customer s whose contract is due for renewal. And sending the documents by courier. Couldn t the sales rep who called just this morn. inform me about these changes. And the cheek of it all its as if they are doing us a favour if renewing they are giving me the go stars for free for 6 months. Hey but wait I pay for 3 decoders and they only will be giving it to me on one decoder. Go, melita all of you daylight robbery.... shame on you.

Though a fan of forensic detective programs, I could not stand watching Living TV with its repeated intervals which make a 42 min CSI episode stretch to 60 minutes. The same can be said for Mediaset channels. With millions of viewers's sets sucking power, surely Brussels could clamp down on useless intervals and manipulative mind influancing commercial advertising which account easily for 10% of all power used by TV's. If commercial advertizing is the bread and butter of TV why do we have to pay for it for invading our homes?

As the saying goes. NEVER MIND THE QUALITY, JUST PAY THE PRICE. All we have is just repeats from BBC Entertainment, repeats from Discovery, Granada with 5 year old programmes And a mass of local talk shows WOW! Oh! must not forget the antiquated TCM and the bankrupt MGM channels. As for the fantastic movie channels on offer, might as well go to my local DVD shop and get a far better choice for a much cheaper price. Malta was, is, and will always be, where the customer is always made to pay through his nose for crappy services. There, my rant is over now.

GO stars – will be offered free of charge to all Gold tv customers until June 2011. What will happen after June 2011? Will the outcry over the Comedy channel and living have died down?

I opted for gold as wanted comedy Channel to be available. I am seriously considering dropping it, as it is not worth keeping without. Go STARS is not what i wanted whilst Food Network and Animal Planet are NOT what i like to watch, anyway. This is mediocre service par excellence...We demand a refund!

i cant even imagine how much money these tv operators stole from their clients, as it is obvious that they had no rights to distribute these channels. i will miss these channel very much as they were my favorite but i also think what happened is good because now people will know what type of tv operators malta has.. ive been watching living for as long as i remember, and as i said i cant even try to imagine how much money they made from these two channels.

When is GO going to introduce a French and a Spanish speaking channel? It would be a great service to our students if these channels are introduced, just as Melita service has. Many have been asking for these channels for a long time. Can GO introduce these immediately?

Dec 6th 2010, 17:59
If Melita are also being forced to drop these channels, then why are they keeping quiet about it? To surprise me on Thursday evening when i get back home from work? After all Melita are renowned for their brilliant and efficient customer care.
So instead of two good channels, i.e. Comedy Channel and Living, GO customers can now watch Zone reality and a Food channel. Wow! What brilliant channels. Always wanted to spend hours watching people cook and people being rescued. Oh and we get movies too. Joy oh joy, we can now watch countless hours of third rate flop movies over and over again too!
Thank God my contract is coming to an end and i can finally put an end to this rubbish we get lumped with in Malta. (and it's not exactly cheap either) This year i am already missing the weekend football and i am now going to also be missing my favourite TV show.....what a joke!

I am a Gold package customer and just signed a two year contract and for Go to think that replacing two of the best channels, Comedy and Living TV with Food Network and Animal Planet is acceptable, they must be arrogant to even think that this is acceptable.
They seem to forget that their clients know their TV stations and has been watching these stations before Go came into the picture. especially when they have some 11 of their channels showing food preparation and other food related programme?
This must be a payback for Go not cooperating with Melita about the Sports Channels and it has now come home to roost, pity it is the Customers who always suffers!

If go is going to take off the comedy channel than it is no use at all.now go want`s to give us the movie channel for free till june 2011, when a few month`s ago i as a gold card customer a few months ago GO wanted us to pay up extra for the movie channel, and now they are taking off the comedy channel.so i say to myself, i left melita because they truely does not know the meaning of customer, i am the one who pays. And now this joke about Go. i will wait and then i will do like the others BOTH OF THEM OUT.

@jonathan borg the channels will be taken off as from Thursday and that is why you are still able to see them on Melita and even on GO they are on. Better read the article before you answer any questions.

In other words, expect Living to be removed from Melita's line up as well any time soon.
