GO forced to drop Living TV and Comedy Channel from TV line-up

GO television said today that as a result of international broadcasting developments, it will have to stop the retransmission of two tv channels – Living TV and Comedy Channel as from Thursday as the territorial rights for these channels cannot be cleared for Malta and are therefore not available for redistribution by any tv operator.

However, it said it had made improvements to its Silver and Gold packages.

GO’s Silver package will now include Zone Reality, Fine Living Network (FLN) and Animal Planet, the latter being a new channel to GO’s tv line-up.

The Gold package will be further enhanced with the Food Network and Animal Planet. In addition, GO’s movies and series channel – GO stars – will be offered free of charge to all Gold tv customers until June 2011.

Food Network is a unique lifestyle channel that strives to be way more than cooking. The network is committed to exploring new and different ways to approach food - through pop culture, competition, adventure, and travel - while also expanding its repertoire of technique-based information.

GO said the popular Animal Planet channel is the world’s only entertainment brand that immerses viewers in the full range of life in the animal kingdom with rich, deep content on multiple platforms. Programming highlights on Animal Planet include Whale Wars, River Monsters, I'm Alive, Monsters Inside Me, Pit Bulls, Parolees and Dogs 101.

During December GO stars will not only premiere top comedy series such as The Big Bang Theory and The Middle however also showcase a number of first run movies including The Hangover, Sherlock Holmes, The Informant, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in addition to other premiering titles such as Zodiac, The Brave One, The Prestige, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, The Invasion, A Serious Man, and Lucky You.

The changes in the tv line-up will be implemented on Thursday. Furthermore GO will be shortly announcing further channels in its tv line-up.

GO apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Hi Mr. Tabone,

I am sharing your same situation. The only reason why I switched to Gold+ was to be able to view the Living, Trouble and Paramount. Quite recently, Trouble and Paramount became Comedy Central. These two stations are being replaced by two stations which I'm not particularly interested in and the only reason why I was considering to keep the Gold+ service was to be able to view Go Stars, which is an acceptable trade-off.

Having more than a single set top box puts Go's consumer to a disadvantage because to view the Go Stars channel, one has to constantly keep changing cards between set top box because Go decided to give their consumers only one go stars per household. If they do understand that losing two important stations is an inconvenience to the consumer, how greater the inconvenience is to keep switching cards......????? In my opinion, this is not worth it, and would gladly rent a couple of DVDs per month and downgrade the service.

I sure hope that Go reconsiders this inconvenient approach.

Everyone is trying to hint that Dreambox is the solution. May I point out that all those using a dreambox and is paying for a service to share the keys of normally blocked stations such as SKY is actually breaking the law. So before doing any affirmations it is best to check what can and what cannot be done.

If all of you out there are going to continue doing so, do remember that for such a service you have to use the internet in order to see such stations as these keys are obtained over the internet.

May I remind you that the two TV providers also offer Internet services, and in most of the cases most of dreambox users are using one of their backbones. If that does not switch on a light...just think about it...they are the same people who can actually block such a service. The technology to do so is readily available and believe me it is not expensive...

I agree with your statement. GO didn't keep their word. I consider this as breach of contract. The Food Network and Animal Planet are not 2 stations I would have opted for. They are not similar to Living and Comedy Chanel. I would have expected similar stations to replace these 2. As for GO Stars I have 2 things to say 1: As a Gold customer I expected this station to be free from the beginning. 2. Had I wanted this station I would have signed up for it. I was not too impressed with it when it aired for free in summer as there were too many repeats.

Why should we have to wait till the 2 year contract to expire when we signed the contract because we actually thought that these two channels were part of the package.......they didn`t keep their word, so why should we?

I don`t care if they lost the rights to these channels, i

@Mr Hansford,

As a journalist you would have surely read the report carried today by The Times wherein Melita clearly state that they are not switching off these channels since discussions on the matter are still underway.

You should check your facts before commenting in public. Your position carries responsibilities.

@Ms Borg
i fail to understand your accusation , i asked a question purely because the said company has promised other things in the past and never honoured them like the Bayern Munich TV channel which was only on for an hour a day and nobody knew the time it would air. At least GO have always kept there word . So you expect me to just shut up and not ask questions, and i should just accept what was reported ? Oh by the way Ms Borg dont you find it strange that living was taken off form Melita's channel list http://www.melita.com/personal/tv/channels/?

I think these are situations beyond control of GO and Melita so as long as they provide reasonable alternatives ... you got no case!

Christine Bright

Dec 8th 2010, 13:12

S. Camilleri,
Let me ask again since from your posts you seem to be in the know how of the ways Go and/or Melita work.

1. In my contract there are no clauses saying that should changes in the tv line up occur for reasons BEYOND OUR CONTROL, customers can be offered another alternative.

2. Beyond our control reasons should be specified too.

3. If Go had made an agreement for the retransmission of channels with another foreign company, their should have been a clause which states what type of procedure should be followed in the event territorial rights are not cleared to protect itself and its customers.

4. It's high time Go introduced more FTA channels mainly Rai Storia, Rai Gulp, MBC Action, K2, Boing, Pop, Tiny Pop etc without adding costs to customers. Go has been saying that there will be an addition to the channels for ages so one would expect FTA and other Sky UK/ Sky Italia channels

i agree

comedy and living is 2 of the 10 prog i watch. iv got the gold package and signed aq contract for 2 yrs too!! Food tv is not going to substitute comedy central!!! Discovery channel is going to be the only decent channels there are! not to mention the sports channels too!

Always read the small print before signing contracts. Service providers, as per the signed contract, are free to add, remove or substitute any channels. Very convenient for them, but they are within the law.

In Melita's Terms and Conditions
4. PROGRAMMING

4.1 All programming, programme services, channel allocations and channels are subject to change at Melita’s absolute discretion.

4.2 Customers acknowledge that many of the channels delivered by Melita over the cable network are under the control of third parties, and as such, Melita is not responsible for the availability of such Channels, their content, or for any changes in the scheduling or availability of specific programmes. Parental control is available for those subscribing to a service requiring a set-top box.

4.3 The Electronic Programming Guide (the `EPG’) programming guide provided by Melita is correct at the time of preparation. Programmes are subject to change without prior notice at the Channel’s own discretion.

Fair isn't it?

What you're angry about is what you agree to, just read the terms and conditions. It's the way things are unfortunately.

That said, I can feel your frustration, as we're in the same boat.

There is no reference in my small print contract that they can change the channels.

I just phoned Melita , and I was told that they are working on it, and will inform clients accordingly. When I asked about refund possibilities , the rep, just repeated the same sentence

Dec 7th 2010, 10:51

@ Ms. Mizzi

You clearly have no idea of what jurisdiction is about. The MBA has no power to intervene on territorial rights awarded by international providers.

Moreover, Melita have announced (see today's Times) that their discussions with international providers are still underway with a view to maintain transmissions.

The GO statement is nothing but a clear attempt at manipulating public opinion, drawing sympathy and confusing people's minds by making it seem that Melita are also switching off these channels immediately.

Customers should be treated with more respect and GO should know better than treating us in this shameful way.

At the same time, GO are totally silent on their botched investment in Greece.

S. Camilleri

Dec 7th 2010, 16:59

@Ebejer

Melita are just trying to do what they do best.... procrastinate and perpetuate doubt and indecision. I would think that before GO put up such a statement, they did their homework with relative providers. We'll see what happens ... .and who will get sued if he does not comply

The reason why these channels cannot be provided falls under Force Majeure which is stated in the GO TV service Terms & Conditions, hence this is not applicable.

Boo Hoo. Not Fair.. Not Fair!!!! Wail!! Mummy do something...... Grow up please. Life is not fair and you certainly have no God given right to watch Living! Tell that to the owners of Living. After all they are forcing GO (and Melita I guess) to stop showing it in Malta!

Ohh come on!! Your comment surely suggests you have no idea how things work. If GO had no right to transmit these channels, than it would have been sued by the owners of living tv and comedy channel. Further still, they would stop transmitting at once and not wait till Thursday!

But, to out your mind at 'rest':

Melita said they are working on the issue, so far they have removed Living TV only from their list of channels...and yes I read the press statement, but since no similar statement was forthcoming from Melita (who am I kidding?), I thought I'd ask.
