The president of the jury of the tenth International Salon Ganfa in Nantes (November 24-December 8), Christiane Toulouse (also founder and president of the International Salon in La Rochelle, France) wrote to me to say that the Gozitan sculptor Mario Agius won the silver medal at this important international exhibition.
This event attracted painters, sculptors and ceramists from France as well as numerous foreign artists living in France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Holland, Russia, China, Japan and Thailand.
The Gozitan artist exhibited two works entitled Disparity and Ballerina.
I discovered Mr Agius’s remarkable stoneworks and woodworks at the exhibition Unity in the Diversity, organised by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce at De La Salle Palace in Valletta last May.
I admired his technical skill and emotional depth, the hidden strength of his poetic and dramatic visions with some discrete religious and philosophical speculations, and suggested that he submit his export quality sculptures to organisers of Ganfa International Salon in Nantes.
I am very pleased that the jury, who saw only two sculptures of Mr Agius, born in 1956, shared my opinion on his extraordinary talent, his professional competence and achievements.
