Aikido will be one of the various sports and disciplines offered through the Girls on the Move programme, organised by the Malta Sports Council (KMS).
The programme is open to girls aged between nine and 16, and offers an opportunity for young girls to learn a martial art in a safe and supportive environment, under qualified supervision.
Aikido focuses primarily on self-defence and teaches teenagers how to handle violence without themselves becoming violent. It also helps reduce stress and anxiety at an age where self-esteem issues start to arise.
It can also help one to keep fit and stay healthy, and it boosts confidence which in turn leads to higher self-esteem.
Training sessions take place once a week and are held at the Aikido Yamato Club at Maria Assumpta School, Ħamrun, every Saturday afternoon between 3 and 4.15 p.m. All sessions will be coached by qualified black belt instructor Kevin Bonanno.
Those interested in joining this programme are to contact the KMS Head Office, Cottonera Sports Complex, Cospicua on 2166 0657/8, or send an e-mail to programmes@sportmalta.org.mt, or visit www.sportmalta.org.mt.
