Thousands of people took part today in the second President's Charity Fun Run in aid of l-Istrina.

More than 7,000 registered and paid a contribution of €10 each by yesterday but many more join the run today. Last year's participation was under 6,000.

President George Abela led a sea of joggers under glorious sunshine from San Anton to the Palace in Valletta. An equally large charity walk was held simultaneously from Casa Leone in Sta Venera to Valletta.

President Abela was flanked by Health Minister Joseph Cassar and Labour deputy leader Anglu Farrugia.

In brief comments before the run, he welcomed the increased turnout and said this event was an example of unity among the people. He thanked all those involved in the organisation for their work.

Mrs Abela led the charity walk from Casa Leone. The walkers, cheering to cameras at various points, packed St Joseph High Road for the start and walked behind Mrs Abela, Prime Minister and Mrs Gonzi and Opposition leader Joseph Muscat and Mrs Muscat.

The roads from Attard down to Sta Venera, Hamrun, Blata l-Bajda and St Anne Street, Floriana were cleared of traffic to make way for the cheering runners and walkers.

Bands contributed to the festive atmosphere along the way, playing Christmas tune. A Father Christmas also took part in the walk.

The event is being sponsored by Banif Bank Malta, whose head and many of the staff are also taking part. Bank of Valletta said that some 500 of its staff also participated.

The runners and walkers joined up and streamed into Valletta through City Gate for a grand finale at the Palace Square, where some food and drinks stands have been set up. Booklets on healthy lifestyle were distributed.

At the end of the event the Prime Minister presented Dr Abela with a donation of €10,000 on behalf of the governemnt. Dr Muscat presented another €1,000 on behalf of the Opposition.

Dr Abela thanked all participants and urged those who watched the event on television to join up next year and share the fun.

He later commented that the back injury he suffered earlier this year had not affected him.
