Almost 400 beneficiaries of international protection from Malta were relocated to other EU countries in the past year through the European Re-Allocation for Malta (EUREMA) pilot project, the Home Affairs Ministry said yesterday.

A new project to follow up EUREMA is due to be launched next year, the ministry said in a statement.

The burden sharing agreement and repatriation efforts to combat illegal immigration were among the items discussed between Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici and his French counterpart Brice Hortefeux during meetings over two days in Malta.

The ministers agreed that the Pact on Immigration and Asylum has achieved its aim of putting immigration firmly on the EU agenda, to the extent that this subject always features in meetings of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.

Mr Hortefeux left Malta yesterday afternoon.
