I refer to reports and caption stories carried in The Times on Friday, November 26, and The Sunday Times (November 28), stating that “Marsascala residents last Thursday boycotted the opening of the €27 million upgraded Sant’Antnin waste recycling facility”.
First of all, it has to be pointed out that Marsascala residents were not invited to the opening ceremony in the morning but were invited to a different event during the evening.
Contrary to what has been reported, hundreds of Marsascala residents attended a reception hosted by WasteServ at the new Sant’Antnin plant on Thursday evening.
Although the Front Kontra l-Impjant għar-Riċiklaġġ ta’ Sant’Antnin urged residents to boycott the event held in the evening and to send their invitations back to the ministry, the event was highly successful and the ministry received only one invitation back.
The €27 million Sant’Antnin centre for the treatment of waste was built according to European environmental standards and was co-financed by the EU in order to increase the separation of waste in Malta; an amount of waste will be exported for recycling, another amount will be converted into compost, andthe plant will produce electricity from waste.
As a result of less waste and lower fuel consumption, this project will help improve our country’s environment, improve the quality of air and offer a better standard of health.
