Sciriha upbeat over Mifsud pursuit
Valletta may boast the strongest squad in the top flight but this has not dampened Victor Sciriha’s desire to re-sign Michael Mifsud.
Their endeavours to persuade Mifsud to rejoin them have proved fruitless so far as the Malta captain has again opted to bide his time in the hope of relaunching his career with a foreign club but Sciriha struck an upbeat note yesterday.
“Every club would love to have a player like Michael Mifsud,” he said.
“The problem with Michael is that he is still hoping to continue his career overseas but I think the time has come for him to make a decision. I believe that if Michael opts to stay in Malta, he will rejoin Valletta. He told me that he would play for Valletta if he decides to stay here.”
Asked if he was optimistic about getting his man, the Valletta president said: “I’m always optimistic.”
With or without Mifsud, Valletta look well on course to capture the title this season. Yet, Sciriha is not entirely happy.
“I’m not satisfied because we drew three matches which we should have won,” he said.
“Against Floriana, we had the better chances despite finishing with 10 men, in the 2-2 draw with Hibs, we also ended with 10 men after our captain (Gilbert Agius) suffered an injury after we had already made the three substitutions and in the draw against Birkirkara, we missed a penalty when we were 2-1 up and they scored a late equaliser.”

Perhaps Valletta should wait a couple of months. It seems Mifsud is only able to play for a club a couple of weeks per year, and there's no point in paying out the kind of wage he expects if he stops playing well after five or six games.
Seriously, it is disastrous how one of Malta's best footballers has handled his career right when he should be having his best years. Although he still manages to do an acceptable job for Malta, it is absurd that he can't adjust his expectations to match what is possible in real life. And it would be much better to see him playing for a Maltese club than not playing at all.
