A greenhouse created with more than 1,500 recycled plastic bottles was recently inaugurated at St Benedict College Safi Primary, at an event organised by the school, Ekoskola committee in conjunction with Wasteserv, Dinja Waħda, the Frott Artna organisation and Safi council.

The event included an assembly for all children, parents and guests during which Ekoskola committee members and pupils from Year 5 give a presentation regarding their visit to a professional greenhouse in Għammieri.

Various environmental activities were organised for all age groups, including storytelling, a quiz and a hands-on session.

The Frott Artna organisation provided fruit and vegetables for all the children, partially funded by the European Commission.

Information activities and hands-on cooking sessions using organic vegetables were carried out by all age groups.

Year 6 pupils also planted cabbage, broccoli and strawberries in the school’s front garden.

The event was also attended by members of the Ekoskola committee members of St Benedict College Qrendi Primary.

To conclude the programme, pupils of the school participated in an audiovisual show explaining how the greenhouse was an example of recycling, so as to create ‘life from waste’.
