A shortage of “simple resources” in laboratories was hindering University students from doing certain scientific investigations for their thesis, according to a science student who addressed graduates yesterday.
“I imagine a foreign professor thinks some of our laboratory equipment forms part of a museum,” graduate Julia Alexander said in a ceremony at University.
The computer with a floppy disk drive, fume cupboards that did not work and leaky working benches were clear examples of lack of investment in the Biology and Chemistry Department, she said.
Ms Alexander also criticised the parrot-like method of teaching still used by certain lecturers, who crammed huge amounts of knowledge in one hour. “Although it’s negative and shameful, this is reality,” she said.
In another speech, Matthew Agius, who graduated from the European Documentation and Research Centre, called on the government to implement its promise to set up a trust fund. The fund, which would attract private investment, would help widen the opportunities available to University students, he said.
