400 migrants transferred to other countries under EU programme

Illegal immigration, including the burden sharing agreement and repatriation efforts, were discussed yesterday and today during a visit to Malta by French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux.

M. Hortefeux had meetings with Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici.

The Home Affairs Ministry in a statement pointed out that almost 400 beneficiaries of international protection from Malta were reallocated to other European Union countries in the past year through the European Re-Allocation for Malta (EUREMA) pilot project. A new project to follow up EUREMA is due to be launched next year.

The ministers agreed that the Pact on Immigration and Asylum has achieved its aim of putting immigration firmly on the agenda of the European Union, so much so that this subject always features in meetings of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.

M. Hortefeux left Malta this afternoon.
