A bridge too far
Would you really want to cross the Gozo channel on a bridge constructed by the people who build Malta’s roads?

This reminds me of that common phenomenon called 'a love-hate relationship'. This is how it often works. You love something (or someone) but you resent your dependence on it. It can be very upsetting to the person so afflicted. But it's not all bad news. There are solutions. Every anguish has an antidote. To bridge or not to bridge - that is the question. All is not fwell in the State Gozo gets itself in.

For or against, the whole question is academic. Who is going to pay for it? The EU (Gonzi would need to go cap in hand for double the dough he has already received), the Maltese taxpayer (fat chance), more government debt (no chance) - or the main beneficiaries, the Gozitans? Er, any more dope, anyone?

Mr Barker,
You have been living in Gozo for a long time enjoying the hospitality of the very good people of that wonderful and beautiful island and yet you have never ever have anything nice to say about the place you have made your home for so many years. You must like it because otherwise you would be back in your country of birth enjoying the wonderful weather they are having right now.
If a bridge were to be build joining Malta and Gozo I am very sure that it would be build with such a skill as the famous churches, bastions and other wonderful buildings that have withstood the test of time, hundreds of years in fact.

Why not? We could always ask the 'know-it-all' new residents to come up with a design. Without doubt it would be as successful as the roads that they designed for us, not least the 'christmas tree' traffic lights that were installed in places like the roundabout near the old gas tank at Kappara!

Revel Barker, people who have been building Malta's roads over the last few years are doing a good job. Perhaps you would care to tell us the name of your country of origin. I have lived abroad and visited a lot of other countries. They all have good roads and not-so-good roads; some worse than others.
And, yes, I would want to cross the Gozo channel on a bridge constructed by the people who build Malta's roads. In fact, I am looking forward to it!
