Mario Bonello and Rebecca Camilleri have been named MAAA athletes of the year.

Describing Bonello as a “long-time stalwart of Athletics Malta, an Olympian and a familiar face at the GSSE”, the Malta Amateur Athletics Association said his exploits at the European Third League Championships, his leadership and example, inspired the Council to nominate him as the athlete of the year.

In the summer, Bonello also won the 100m gold medal at the European Masters Championships in Hungary.

Camilleri was named female athlete of the year following her magnificent achievement during the National Championships, when “she overcame the odds to establish a new national record in the long jump of 6m 22cm”.
