Commissioner to mediate in Red Cross dispute
Malta Red Cross claims ‘serious breaches’ by Gozo mNGOs embers
Voluntary Organisations Commissioner Kenneth Wain is to try to mediate in the “unhealthy situation” that has arisen between the Maltese and Gozitan groups of the Malta Red Cross.
“Both are doing important and useful work and it would be sad to lose one of them. One of my functions is to seek compromise in such circumstances. Hopefully it is not too late,” he said when contacted.
The Gozo branch of Malta Red Cross on Sunday called for Prof. Wain’s intervention after the Red Cross Society suspended its operations locked its offices.
But yesterday the Malta Red Cross issued a statement decrying the “embarrassing” behaviour of those who “threatened, insulted and vilified the society publicly across various media”.
Director general Edward Caruana said the Malta Red Cross had “endured repeated, serious statutory breaches” by certain members which culminated in recent months with actions in breach of safety norms.
