English Premier League champions Chelsea moved to second place in the league table after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle at St James' Park today.

The result left Chelsea ahead of London rivals Arsenal on goal difference and two points behind leaders Manchester United.

England striker Andy Carroll gave Newcastle a sixth-minute lead before the Ivory Coast's Salomon Kalou dragged the Blues level on the stroke of half-time with a deflected shot at a snow-covered St James'.

Tottenham play Liverpool in today's other Premier League match.
