You are perfectly right. Without the right protective gear ice skating can be a dangerous sport with a spate of fractures and the occasional serious facial and head injury. My grandchildren in Canada who love ice related sports fill up the whole of a large car boot with protective gear when the go iceskating or playing hockey.
As the American medical council advises " The best advice we can offer parents is that children should wear a well-fitted appropriately worn helmet while ice-skating to reduce the risk of head injuries." . It is also important that children are given lessons on how to fall safely on the ice. I would also add that any beginner should also wear heavily padded clothes especially to protect their backsides.

What Ice? It's just a plastic floor (hard too I agree) with some unknown chemical sprayed on top to make it slippery.

The only ice arena which was decent was the late one in paceville. Apparently this farce, which costs over 5 times the amount per hour is supposed to entertain us. It may pass for kids but adults will be disappointed.
