The planning authority has received an application for the development of an LPG storage facility and bottling plant on Polidano Group’s land in Ħal-Farruġ, limits of Siġġiewi, The Sunday Times has learnt.

Although the development has been earmarked on the property owned by construction mogul Charles Polidano (Ċaqnu), the application was filed by a certain Joseph Manduca.

The proposal is for a storage facility of LPG gas in two underground tanks and the change of use of a shed into a “portable bottling plant”. The application also covers the creation of a new internal road within the premises.

When contacted, Mr Polidano confirmed the project. However, he pointed out that the application was not submitted by the Polidano Group but by a third party and his architect, who are seeking to undertake the project on land owned by the group.

“In line with its strategic direction, in this particular case, the group will seek to maximise any synergies that may be derived from such third party investments, primarily in the light of the existent investment already made by Poligas in this sector,” he said.

Along with this full development permit application submitted to Mepa, with deadline for representations from the public having closed last week, the Malta Resources Authority is also considering an application for a permit for the development of an LPG facility in Ħal-Farruġ.

A spokesman could not confirm who had filed this application.

Polidano Group’s Poligas supplies gases, including oxygen, for medical and industrial purposes. The company’s plant in Ħal-Farruġ was opened in 2006.
