La Valette Band concert

The La Valette Band’s symphony concert held recently at the Catholic Institute, Floriana, was one of the most enjoyable I have been to.

Two hours of excellent entertainment offered through the clever selection of musical pieces featuring classical, modern and incidental music catering for all tastes, by foreign and local composers.

At one point in the concert the gradual rise of the statue of St Paul from underneath and its eventual full appearance on stage, was quite an innovation. The surprise was greeted with spontaneous applause and duly accompanied by a fitting selection from Charles Camilleri’s oratorio Pawlu ta’ Malta.

Congratulations to the conductor Dominic Darmanin and the La Valette Band (the young competent flautist Maria Bonnici deserves a special mention) for an excellent performance.

As the compere Charles Coleiro rightly observed when introducing the song Something Wonderful from the medley of popular musicals, this concert was indeed wonderful.
