Kevin Ghirxi, a marine engineer by profession, was recently awarded a Ph.D. in Maritime Administration from the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden.

The doctoral research was sponsored by Transport Malta, Lloyd’s Register of London, and Det Norske Veritas, Norway.

Between 2002 and 2003, Dr Ghirxi read for a Master of Science degree in Maritime Affairs and majored in maritime safety and environmental protection. He was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence.

His doctoral research focused on maritime accident safety investigations. Dr Ghirxi researched several investigative organisations in order to identify the factors which may influence the decision of a maritime accident safety investigator to end the investigation.

Dr Ghirxi regularly lectures at WMU and is active in the field of maritime accident safety investigation within Transport Malta’s Merchant Shipping Directorate.

He is also a member of the Maltese delegation to one of the International Maritime Organisation’s sub-committees, and Malta’s representative to the European Maritime Safety Agency’s consultative technical group on maritime accident safety investigations.

He is a member of two academic groups: the research group within WMU on maritime risk and the project group within the European Safety, Reliability and Data Association on dynamic learning as the follow-up from accident investigation.
