I refer to Charles Galea’s letter entitled Was Transfer A Cost-Cutting Exercise? (November 24).

There is no cost-cutting involved in the deployment of a teacher from one school to another. Although a teacher from Gozo College Girls’ Secondary School will be deployed to another school, the students’ entitlement for graphical communication at the girls’ secondary school will be covered as necessary.

The teacher in the other school, who is due to retire in the second term of this scholastic year, was not interested in taking up the option of continuing teaching until the end of the scholastic year.

As soon as the Directorate for Educational Services became aware of this information, action was taken to see how the lessons at the other school could be covered.

As there are no teachers available in the subject to be deployed, the directorate had to make internal arrangements to cover the shortage that would have cropped up in the second term of this scholastic year.

As it was found out that the lessons of the two teachers serving at the girls secondary school could be covered by one teacher, the directorate took action to deploy one of the teachers to the other school.

It was precisely for the reason of taking into consideration the students at both schools that the teacher was deployed now (towards the end of November and not in the next term) so students at both schools will be able to adjust to the new teachers.

Mr Galea has to note that the Directorate for Educational Services has the responsibility to see that all students attending the various state schools get their educational entitlement.
