University don calls for preservation and protection of industrial heritage

Malta’s rich industrial heritage had to be carefully preserved and protected because important parts had already disappeared, the dean of the Engineering Faculty warned yesterday.

Robert Ghirlando made a passionate plea to save, among others, the machinery and industrial buildings that date back to the time of the British and before. He was speaking during yesterday’s graduation ceremony at the Jesuits church, in Valletta.

“We have already lost the Gasan garage in Rue D’Argens and the Mira building in Gżira. The latter was an imposing building, which I definitely feel did not deserve to be pulled down. Were the planners aware these buildings were used to repair Spitfires during the war?” he asked.

Prof. Ghirlando also suggested recording and noting the original Maltese words used by tradesmen, especially in the case of trades that had died or were dying out.

Malta was known for its rich artistic and military heritage but less for its industrial past. However, awareness was growing, he said.

Malta was exposed to the latest technologies when it was under British rule and lost “a very good technical school” when they left in the 1970s, Prof. Ghirlando said.

In another speech, Daniela Gatt, who graduated Doctor of Philosophy, called for an in-depth study of the language development of Maltese children to eventually facilitate and improve the services to those with language impairments.

“Although research efforts are being channelled in this direction, there is a dire need for further scientific investigation that aims to document typical language acquisition,” she said.
