Domestic violence in Europe costs €1m every half hour
At least 45 per cent of women in Europe were physically abused by men and one out of five suffered from domestic violence, figures show.
It was estimated that the annual cost of domestic violence in the 27 EU member states could be as high as €16 billion, or €1 million every half hour, the Malta Confederation of Women Organisations said yesterday. However, the annual budgets of EU countries for prevention programmes amounted to much less, it added.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which is celebrated today, the confederation joined the European Women’s Lobby to condemn all forms of violence.
It expressed hope that the publication of a study by the Commission on Domestic Violence in the near future would shed more light on the prevalence of domestic violence in Malta.

Yeah, maybe their 'statistic' is derived from questioning a sample of 50 individuals or so, and including anything remotely disagreable ever done by a male - such as getting a little smack on the behind from dad at 6 years old for misbehaving, or little Johnny pulling their hair in primary school - and lumping everything as 'physical abuse by a man' :) Such BS propaganda just demeans and dilutes the plight of those who are genuinely being abused.

Hux 45% !! Idghulhom ma jdahquniex! Min fejn gew dawn il figuri? U x'inhi id-definizzjoni ta' 'physical abuse'? Jaqaw anke jekk thares bl-ikrah lil xi hadd sar 'physical abuse' illum? Umbghad igibu stampa ta' mara VERA imsawta, biex forsi nibilawha li nofs in-nisa jew iktar qeghdin f'dik is-sitwazzjoni estrema! Nistenna livell ta' reporting ahjar minn dan is-sensazzjonalizmu ibbazat fuq ix-xejn.

…means 24 millions euros per day in such weak financial atmosphere surrounding the globe? The issue is serious indeed.
Various studies show that man-made evils such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, usury among the list of the prime reasons for domestic violence that constitute real threat to the wellbeing of the family. Fighting those evils by all ways and means would safe government’s fortunes and safeguards the entire society at large.
Does anybody know how much governments across Europe spend annually on health-related problems ensued from drugs, alcohol and tobacco? BILLIONS of euros! In the meantime taxes collected from gambling, alcohol and tobacco are much less than what governments spend on aforementioned man-made evils.
In Europe we take religion (any religion) lightly and this forms part of our problems too.
