Lego is the “heritage” toy most likely to be passed on to future generations, according to a poll.

Children can also expect to be given their parents’ teddy bears, Rubik’s Cube and dolls’ house, the survey to mark the DVD release of Disney’s Toy Story 3 found.

Other favourites include Barbie and Ken dolls, Matchbox cars, Scalextric, train sets, rag dolls and marbles.

Two-thirds of adults said they wanted to pass on their childhood toys to their own offspring and 42 per cent said their children owned at least one toy that was originally theirs.

The top motivation behind handing down toys was sentimental value (55 per cent) followed by charitable reasons (13 per cent) and financial savings (eight per cent).

The survey also revealed that the average Briton accumulated 154 toys from birth to the age of 16, with the average adult continuing to own three of them as keepsakes.

Ronnie Dungan, managing editor of trade magazine Toy News, said: “Toy treasures are such a big part of British heritage and it’s great to see that we still carry such a sentimental attachment to our childhood favourites.”
