Researchers urged to collaborate better

Maltese researchers should collaborate better to overcome the challenges and hurdles they would have to face, a Doctor of Philosophy graduate said yesterday.

Even though the Maltese were a social people by nature, they were “very reserved” when it came to sharing or discussing their research, Owen Casha said during a graduation ceremony at the Jesuit Church, Valletta.

Research, he said, also had to be closely tied to the industry by having a practical purpose. “We cannot remain closed in our laboratories and ask for funds without thinking of how this research can help the economy grow,” Dr Casha said.

In another speech, Sandro Caruana, from the Department of Arts and Languages, spoke about the importance of both Maltese and English in society. “We need to develop more awareness of the fact that the English language is a very important inheritance for us all here in Malta. It is our window to the world and helps us gain access to a wealth of knowledge,” Prof. Caruana said.

This, however, did not mean the Maltese language should suffer. “Safeguarding, developing and promoting the use of Maltese – the language of our identity – is a process which has to be complementary and not in conflict with the improvement of the standards of English locally,” he said.
