The Labour Party said today that it was shameful that the government had not managed to re-aquire a 12,640 square metre plot pf land in Qawra which had been transferred to GO when the telecoms company was privatised.

The party said the government was continuing to show weakness in the safeguarding of the country's assets.

When GO was sold, the governemnt had said that it had been agreed that the land in Qawra would be transferred to it, the PL recalled.

Yet, four years on, it had been declared in Parliament that the land - which the party said was valued at €25 million - was still on the company's books.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech also said in Parliament that negotiations for its transfer were being finalised.

The party observed that in May 2006 Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt had said in Parliament that agreement for the land to revert to the government had been reached.

Yet, the PL said, the land had not been handed over to the government.

Mr Fenech's reply in parliament yesterday contrasted sharply with Dr Gatt's earlier comment, the PL said. All this, it said, was further confirmation of government incompetence.
