Indiscriminate chopping of trees

I just cannot understand this current trend of destroying trees wherever and whenever. Beautiful environment friendly specimen are taken out without the blink of an eyelid.

First it was in Valletta where mature trees where just chopped down indiscriminately for ludicrous reasons, now it would seem it is the turn of our roundabouts. The photo shown with the article about the chopping down of trees in Paola (Roundabout Denuded, October 5) is nothing short of disgusting and goes against what is being preached on having a greener island.

I do appreciate that many new trees are being planted in certain areas but these are all away from residential domains.

The particular roundabout in question, denuded of trees, will worsen the look of the area as a kind of futuristic “after the bomb!” place.

I must, however, stress that on the shrubs and flowering plants side the Environment Landscape Consortium have done a fantastic job with their eye-pleasing projects.

Just a final plea, please: Think before you let people loose with chainsaws.
