The weather is not that cold yet but as the days get shorter and the November twilight comes earlier, the festive atmosphere and the shopping mania begin to gain ground and European Christmas markets start mushrooming.

Yesterday the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin marked the opening of the “German” Christmas season as stalls, decorated streets and shopping arcades enticed visitors with their magic, charm, and unique items.

The Gendarmenmarket Christmas Market is regarded as one of Berlin’s most beautiful annual events and this is justified when one considers its location framed by the 18th century French and German cathedrals and the Concert House which serve as a historical backdrop.

For the price of €1 (children up to 12 go free) the market at Gendarmenmarkt Square gives shoppers the opportunity to wander around the over 150 stalls offering a wide array of wares or even to watch an international variety of craftsmen at work on toys, wood or jewellery. There also exhibitions featuring the work of painters, photographers, and designers as well as works of art of stone sculptors.

Meanwhile, spendthrifts will be spoilt for choice as they are whisked away to a magical Christmas world full of scrumptious food, fairy lights and yuletide extravaganza.

German traditions abound at Gendarmenmarkt with the Hansel and Gretel-style gingerbread to the ubiquitous Christmas tree – another “German” custom which was exported world-wide. And for the gluttonous lot, top chefs are available to present treats ranging from exquisite snacks to fine dining menu selections in comfortable dining areas.

There is also a stage where musicians, dancers, acrobats and jugglers keep the young and old entertained from the afternoon well into the night.

The Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin stays open for Christmas Eve and the days after Christmas including New Year’s Eve when there is a festive gala with various bands, fireworks, and a waltz dance after midnight to welcome the new year.
