Having witnessed a lady hurting badly in a fall as a result of a 10cm-wide canal purposely cut out in the pavement of the Gżira waterfront, I write hoping that others will avoid similar accidents.

On the Gżira side of the waterfront pavement, a maze of canals each about 10cm wide have been cut out over a long stretch of the pavement. These canals run from one tree to the next in places and in others they join a canal at the edge of the pavement.

They are particularly dangerous where they run along the length of the pavement, across the top end of the ramps which slope down to the road. This pavement is frequented by many people of all ages and variable degrees of eyesight. As they are narrow they are not easily noticeable especially in the evening and yet wide enough for anyone stepping on the edge to lose his or her balance and fall over.

I appeal first to the workmen who cut these canals to erect warning signs without any delay. Further, the local council and/or the Health and Safety Department should see to it that these signs have in fact been put in place. Delay will only translate into bleeding skin and broken bones.
