A Franciscan priest from Xaghra, Fr Joe Bonello OFM, has been nominated auxiliary bishop of Juticalpa, Honduras, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech announced today.

The nomination was made by Pope Benedict.

Mgr Grech welcomed the nomination and said it reflected the generosity of the people of Gozo to the missions. It also showed how the community of Xaghra promoted vocations to the priesthood.

Mgr Grech congratulated Mgr Bonello and the Franciscan Order and urged Maltese families to be always open to vocations to the priesthood.

Mgr Bonello was born on April 4, 1961, and joined the novitiate in Ghajnsielem in 1977. He was ordained priest on July 7, 1985 in a ceremony presided by Archbishop Joseph Mercieca .

He has been a missionary in central America since September 1989 and was parish priest of various parishes.

Also working in the diocese of Juticalpa is Fr Albert Gauci OFM, from Għargħur.
