There were 1,536 instances so far this year where court proceedings against people who did not submit their VAT returns were dropped once the situation was regularised, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in reply to a parliamentary question today.

Mr Fenech said that between January and October the VAT Department had 1,770 new cases in court and 1,613 cases were carried over from last year. In all cases, those involved were given the opportunity to regularise their position before the procedures started in court. 1,536 cases were withdrawn as a result. A further 266 persons were fined. The remaining cases are still pending.
