Turkey started their European Championship Group A qualifiers in style last night as they beat Malta in convincing fashion.

Sergio Afric’s national team had started with a 7-3 win over Poland in the three-team group last month but yesterday the opponents were of a different level as the scoreline clearly shows.

Malta only lasted the pace until midway through the second session when the Turks lifted their game significantly to go 6-2 up at half-time.

The trend continued after the changeover as the hosts scored nine times with Malta replying with a single goal in the fourth quarter. For the record, the goals for Malta were scored by Michele Stellini, Niki Lanzon and Shaun Gravina.

Malta will host Turkey on June 18 before travelling to Poland on July 2 for the side’s remaining qualifer.
