The Ambassador of Malta to Belgium, Pierre Clive Agius, recently led a commemoration in remembrance of Maltese soldiers killed on the Western front during the First World War.

The commemoration was held in front of the Plorgstreert Memorial.

Mr Agius was accompanied by Capt. James Grixti from the AFM and Franklin Mamo, secretary of the Association of Maltese in Belgium. Also present for this ceremony was the mayor of Plorgstreet, Gilbert Deleu, and a delegation from the Commonwealth War Graves Association.

The Maltese flag was hoisted during the ceremony. Following a minute of silence, the Maltese delegation laid flowers in remembrance of all Maltese killed on the Western front during the world wars.

Mr Agius and Mr Deleu discussed the idea of inaugurating a commemorative plaque for Maltese soldiers. The aim is to have this plaque inaugurated in time for the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Great War in 2014.

To this end, the embassy is collecting information on Maltese who served on the Western front. To contact the embassy e-mail maltaembassy.brussels@gov.mt.
