President George Abela recently visited St Clare College Boys’ Secondary School, Gżira, as part of the tour he is making of the 10 colleges which make up the Maltese educational system.
Dr Abela was greeted in the school hall by school head Alfred Grixti, who introduced him to other members of staff.
The Form I choir sang Amazing Grace under the direction of musical director Gordon Zammit. Dr Abela then unveiled a commemorative plaque in the school reception area.
He was welcomed by students holding welcome messages in all seven languages taught at the school, as well as in the native languages of the 40 foreign students who study there.
Dr Abela also visited the new synthetic turf football pitch – the first in Maltese schools to be built through collaboration between stakeholders in education and sport. The project was a joint venture between the school, Gżira United Football Club, Gżira Council, the Malta Football Association and the Malta Sports Council.
School students make use of the pitch during school hours, while it is used by the Gżira United nursery in the evenings.
