The Ekoskola team at St Margaret College Girls Secondary School, Cospicua recently kicked offits activities by organising an animal awareness week, which included a visit to the Island Sanctuary in Delimara and AAA in Luqa.
Each class attended an exhibition, held in collaboration with Moviment Graffitti, about various issues, including fur, animal testing and the problems of animals in captivity.
The Ekoskola committee, under the supervision of social studies department head Brian Chircop, Romina Coreschi and Amanda Zahra, collected donations from students and staff to sponsor dogs at the Island Sanctuary.
Six dogs were sponsored and about 200 kilos of dog food were collected. Students also managed to collect many unwanted clothes, which they donated to the AAA to use as bedding for the dogs.
To conclude the week, SylviaZammit was invited to the school to talk to each class about how the Island Sanctuary is run and the difficulties it encounters.
School head James Camilleri then introduced teachers who brought their own dogs and who spoke to students about how they take care of their pets and the responsibilities involved.
The following week, three of the six sponsored dogs were brought to the school so they could interact with the students.
