Former US president George Bush says he does not miss much about the White House - just the pampering.

Mr Bush told more than 3,000 people at a sprawling Florida retirement community that he missed the convenience of Air Force One and never waiting in traffic jams.

But the 43rd president said that most of all, he missed being commander in chief of the US military.

In his 30-minute speech he talked about what it was like to return the salute of men and women.

The Villages retirement community is heavily Republican. Many in the crowd waved American flags and wore hats noting their military service.

Mr Bush is on a national tour promoting his new book, Decision Points.
