Lest we forget

The fallen of two world wars remembered

Malta yesterday united with other Commonwealth countries to remember the fallen of the two world wars, in a reminder of the horrors of conflicts which changed the face of the world.

Proceedings got under way with President George Abela inspecting the Armed Forces’ Guard of Honour in St John’s Square, followed by concelebrated mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral.

A remembrance ceremony was then held at Floriana’s War Memorial, at whose foot the highest authorities and organisations placed wreaths.

Throughout the wreath-laying ceremony, the Armed Forces of Malta and a Police Corps contingent formed a Guard of Honour together. Also participating was a contingent of ex-servicemen from the Royal British Legion.

Tied to the activities was the traditional Poppy Day Appeal, raising funds for Maltese citizens who were in the service and their dependents.
