Usually I do not read correspondence by Eddy Privitera but his letter of November 6 on divorce was an exception since my attention was drawn to the kind of language he used, which only confirmed that my decision to ignore his writings had been right.

In the democratic world, the majority always rules over the minority, and not vice versa, except on rare occasions of which I can recall only one in Malta.

Comparisons between regulations regarding the priesthood and religious orders and regulations regarding marriage are simply made to confuse innocent minds. Regulations regarding priesthood and religious orders are made by the Church and consequently may be changed, altered, rescinded and replaced by the Church. Regulations regarding marriage were made by Christ himself and consequently the Church has no jurisdiction whatsoever over them.

On the religious aspect of divorce, reference is made to article 2 of the Constitution of Malta where it is stated that the religion of Malta is the Roman Catholic Apostolic Religion. Divorce goes against the teaching of the Catholic Church. Question: Does divorce go against the Constitution? Once divorce is introduced, then no difference shall exist between a quick divorce or otherwise. The granting of same escapes the control of the legislator and shall be entrusted to the judiciary, which is composed of human beings and the interpretation of the law varies from one judge to another. If the judgment suits the parties concerned (probably in collusion), no appeal will be entered and the judgment shall become final and binding. And the strict divorce law ends up a farce. Past experience in similar circumstances comes to my mind. No further elaboration is required.
