A night shelter for the elderly was inaugurated this morning at the Jesus Nazareth Convent in Zejtun by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The shelter, a church – public initiative, may house up to eight elderly, who opt to continue living in the community, during the night.

It is a pilot project in which the government has invested €92,657 and to which it will be contributing €5,000 a year towards its operation. The centre is being run by nuns.

Seven elderly have been using the shelter, which in the past was used as an orphanage, since August.

The elderly using the shelter pay €2 a night for the service which includes the services of a care worker on stand-by.
